How to write a good application to the Danish Emergency Relief Fund (DERF)
Workshop Description
How to write a good application
to the Danish Emergency Relief Fund (DERF)
- about how to apply the Core
Humanitarian Standard when writing an application to the DERF
Learning objective
The online workshop will be in English and provides basic knowledge about the Core Humanitarian Standards (CHS), its nine commitments and how these are integrated in an application to the DERF. Through work with examples the workshop will improve your understanding of the application format, highlight and discuss central elements of how to write a good application.
With this workshop we try something new. Implementing organisations may participate – and are encouraged to do so – if they do this together with their Danish partner organisation. In doing so, it is the Danish organisation, who will have to register the local partners’ participation.
Content of the workshop
The workshop starts with an introduction to the humanitarian principles and a presentation of the Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS) which CISU applies as a quality assurance framework for assessing DERF applications. We will present core elements of the CHS, such as how to ensure relevance and appropriateness of interventions and the difference between feedback and complaints mechanisms.
The second part of the online workshop focuses on how to write a good application to the DERF. We will share examples and engage you in a discussion about how to plan a humanitarian intervention by understanding, addressing and adhering to the CHS. Here we will share experiences and good practice from previous successful DERF applications.
It is hoped that the two sessions of the workshop will spark discussions, questions and answers. At CISU we will be particularly interested in learning where you encounter the greatest challenges in developing your applications, where you are in doubt of section contents or unsure of your proposed intervention approaches.
Who is the target group for this workshop?
This online workshop is for beginners and does not require previous experience of working with humanitarian assistance. This workshop is for you if humanitarian work is new to you, or if you have previously applied to the DERF but found the application format difficult to understand. The workshop will be held in English and is open for CISU members and non-members.
We recommend that people from Danish organisations participate together with people from partner organisations if they are (expected to be) involved in writing DERF applications.
Meet the Facilitators
My name is Christoph. I am looking forward meeting you and to assist you to get a basic understanding of humanitarian aid and the requirement the DERF-fund sets for applicants. I am on a daily base involved in work with the DERF, this as a CISU advisor and as the fund manager of the DERF. I have a deep understanding of what it requires to get an application approved. At the same time do I know the mistakes applicants often do when applying the DERF. I am looking forward sharing my knowledge at the online workshop. Please reach out to me at chl@cisu.dk if you have questions before or after the workshop.
My name is Hans-Jakob Hausmann and I am an advisor at CISU. Before joining CISU in 2021, I spent 20 years working in the development and humanitarian sectors across several continents. It is my pleasure to be able to assist CISU members and non-members to strengthen their applications, technical approaches and implementation of interventions related to funding from the Danish Emergency Relief Fund (DERF). By taking a closer look at the CHS and its 9 commitments, our finest task at CISU is to demystify often abstract, technical subjects in order to help small and medium-sized CSOs in becoming more successful humanitarian practitioners. You are welcome to reach out to me directly via hjh@cisu.dk and I look very much forward to meeting you at the online training.
