General Information:
Projekt title: HID; Health promotion Intervention for type 2 Diabetic people in Kavumu, South Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
· Project Location: Bukavu, in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRCongo)
· International partners: Amitié Congo Denemark, ACD; Hospital Center Karhanda/Kavumu; Kavumu Diabetics Association (ADK).
· Danish partners: Danish Congolese Association, DC; Seniors without Borders, SWB
· Overview of The Project: Aims to improve the vital prognosis and quality of life of 300 patients suffering from diabetes type 2 in South Kivu, rural area of Kavumu through sustainable medical, nutritional and social support.
· Development Issue: Improve knowledge of type 2 diabetes among older people. Change cultural beliefs and illiteracy. Awareness of the importance of proper nutrition, physical activity, blood glucose monitoring, and adherence to treatment.
· Capacity building: Local level: Training of 10 community health workers (CHW) in Kavumu clinic in management of type 2 diabetes. Each CHW will train 30 beneficiaries in how to live a healthy lifestyle. 2 diabetic clubs are created and operate as spaces for training and psychosocial support.
· Context: The health system facing serious challenges; acute resource shortages, the health system under constant pressure from epidemics, armed conflict, and widespread poverty. Insecurity due to repeated wars, extreme poverty and dependence on external financing, irregular supply of medicines and equipment, difficulty in community adherence, lack of qualified personnel.
· People Affected: 300 patients suffering from diabetes type 2 in South Kivu, rural area of Kavumu.
