The cash desk must be the safest part of the store because the revenue of your company is collected there. Although there is video surveillance in most of the stores, as a cashier you still need to be aware of some general safety issues, especially theft and counterfeit money. Whenever you leave the cash desk, make sure that the cash desk is closed on temporary terms. If you need to hand over the cash desk, make sure you take the transaction report and inform your supervisor.
10.9.1 Theft by the Customers
In every case, missing or unpaid goods are lost for your store and your company. There are four different types of thefts: First, instant thefts are unplanned, usually small and cheap items. Sometimes a customer pays partially and sneaks out the rest. Secondly, amateur, planned thefts: some people steal for their own use according to their needs. Thirdly, there is kleptomania, which is a stealing disease, and is usually unplanned, because of the instinct to steal items one usually does not need. This is also irrelevant to social and economic level. Finally, there are professional, planned thefts. These thieves study changes in the store regularly, they steal small and expensive items to resell them, and sometimes they might work in teams.
10.9.2 Counterfeit Money
As a cashier you may receive payment with money that is counterfeit. Once you suspect the money is counterfeit you need to take certain steps to protect yourself. Several security features have been incorporated into the banknotes so that, upon careful examination, the authenticity of the banknotes can be reliably determined by feeling, looking and tilting them.
